Bitcoin's 81% Dormancy Claim: A Supply-Side Number That Cannot Be Verified

Alextoshi

A single statistic has been circulating with unusual persistence: 81% of all bitcoin has not moved in six months. It arrives with no publication date, no threshold definition, no address-clustering methodology, and no second source. It was produced by River, a Bitcoin financial services firm, restated by an aggregator, and absorbed by the market as confirmation of a supply squeeze.

That is not evidence. That is a number with a narrative attached.

I do not dispute that bitcoin is scarce. I dispute that this figure measures scarcity. It measures measurement โ€” whose threshold, whose clustering, whose date. A supply statistic without a methodology is not data; it is marketing with a decimal point.

Understand what is actually being compared. Illiquid supply, as Glassnode defines it, has spent most of the last five years between 70% and 75% of circulating supply. Coin Metrics maintains a separate dormancy construct with its own coin-age bands. River's 81% is not impossible. It is simply not obviously the same measurement as either, and the report as restated does not disclose the definitional machinery.

Six months of inactivity is a permissive threshold. Illiquid supply at Glassnode requires a holder cluster with a documented history of negligible spending โ€” not merely the absence of movement inside one window. Widen the window's permissiveness, and the number climbs mechanically. Cluster addresses badly โ€” counting exchange omnibus wallets, internal consolidation sweeps, or change outputs as independent dormant holders โ€” and it climbs again. Exclude provably lost coins, and it climbs a third time. A sixty percent reading and an eighty-one percent reading can describe the same chain state under three different definitions. Without the appendix, the reader cannot know which one they are holding.

The lost-coin floor deserves separate accounting. Roughly three to four million bitcoin โ€” somewhere between fifteen and twenty percent of the hard cap โ€” is presumed permanently unrecoverable. Those coins will never move again under any circumstance. They are a structural constant inside every dormancy metric, and they systematically inflate the headline. Any interpretation of a dormancy rate must begin by subtracting the dead supply, because the dead supply has no opinion about price.

Then there is the distortion almost nobody has priced: custodian cold storage.

Since the spot ETFs began trading in January 2024, a large block of bitcoin has migrated into custody arrangements whose defining characteristic is that the coins do not move. Creation and redemption happen at the share level; the underlying UTXOs sit in segregated cold wallets for months at a time by design, not by conviction. Aggregate ETF holdings cleared one million bitcoin comfortably during accumulation phases. That is roughly five percent of circulating supply resting inside an immobility band that has nothing to do with holder sentiment.

The arithmetic is uncomfortable. The gap between the long-run seventy-to-seventy-five percent illiquid supply band and River's eighty-one percent is about five to six points. I am not claiming identity. I am claiming that a large fraction of the delta may be custodian inactivity wearing the costume of retail conviction. The HODL narrative, in other words, is partly an accounting artifact.

My skepticism here is not temperamental. In late 2017 I ran a forensic audit of forty-two Ethereum ICO whitepapers, dissecting vesting schedules and utility claims line by line. Seventy percent had no viable revenue model and no mechanism to convert speculative inflow into something durable. More than any specific finding, that exercise taught me to treat any number I could not reproduce as a claim rather than a fact. A statistic becomes usable only when a third party can rebuild it from primary inputs. River has not given anyone the inputs.

In 2020 I modeled Compound's interest rate curves independently while the market chased yield, and flagged a liquidity fragmentation risk if stablecoin pegs deviated beyond two percent. The lesson there was architectural: the mechanism dictates the outcome, and the mechanism is always in the details โ€” the collateral factors, the liquidation thresholds, the deviation bands. Apply that discipline to supply metrics and the mechanism is the statistical definition. Threshold, clustering, exclusions. Change any one, change the answer.

There is a second analytical error layered on top of the first. Dormancy is a stock, not a flow. It carries no directional information whatsoever. A maximal dormancy reading is fully compatible with mid-cycle accumulation and fully compatible with pre-distribution quiet. Historically, long-dormant coins wake up near cycle extremes โ€” dormancy spikes cluster around tops, because price is the only thing that convinces an eight-year holder to move. A static high reading is therefore not a bullish signal. It is an ambiguous one, and the ambiguity is structural rather than incidental.

Liquidity is the only truth in a volatile market. If eighty-one percent of supply is genuinely inert, the tradable float is thin, and thin float amplifies movement in both directions with equal indifference. The same illiquidity that turns modest inflows into violent upside turns modest outflows into violent downside. Framing the number exclusively as a supply squeeze is a selection effect, not an analysis.

What the number actually points toward is a venue migration. When spot depth thins, institutions do not stop trading โ€” they move their expression of risk into perpetual futures, basis trades, and options. Open interest in derivatives grows relative to spot, funding rates become the dominant price-discovery instrument, and the marginal transaction stops touching the underlying chain at all. The dormancy statistic is a rear-view measurement of a market whose price is now set somewhere else.

The microstructure shift of the past two years accelerated this. When I mapped the custody structures behind the 2024 ETF launches, my estimate was that only about fifteen percent of initial inflows represented net new capital; the remainder was portfolio rebalancing, options-adjacent positioning, and rotation out of existing vehicles. The consequence was a lower-beta regime โ€” not because holders became more committed, but because the marginal buyer became an allocator with a policy weight and a quarterly rebalancing calendar. An allocator does not care whether you sold. An allocator cares whether their mandate says four percent or five.

That reframes the supply question entirely. Once the marginal price setter is a target-weight portfolio, supply dormancy is a second-order input. First-order inputs are realized rates, dollar liquidity, global M2, and whether the allocator's mandate is being funded or trimmed. Supply-side data cannot substitute for demand-side evidence, and the entire bullish interpretation of the 81% figure rests on exactly that substitution.

The frontier where forward flow metrics actually exist is elsewhere. My current work evaluates proof-of-compute protocols that settle GPU market access on-chain, and the useful property there is that capital formation is observable in real time โ€” settlement volume, job completion, utilization. My modeling put decentralized compute markets roughly thirty percent cheaper for small AI teams than centralized cloud alternatives, and that cost delta is a flow you can watch move. One metric measures who is standing still. The other measures where capital is going. Only one of them is investable.

Risk is not avoided; it is priced and hedged. So let me run the pre-mortem honestly. I would be wrong if River discloses a methodology matching Glassnode's clustering and threshold, if the publication date lands in a recognizable accumulation window, and if exchange net position change confirms simultaneous withdrawal. I would be wrong if realized capitalization is rising while exchange balances fall, which would indicate genuine absorption rather than custodian inertia. What I cannot do โ€” and what no reader can do โ€” is evaluate any of these conditions against a report with no date. A market metric without a timestamp is not cautiously vague. It is unusable, because it cannot be placed in a cycle.

The consensus reading of this number is a supply squeeze. The contrarian reading is a decoupling. Bitcoin's price has progressively detached from its own on-chain microstructure and re-coupled to macro liquidity conditions and institutional mandate flows. Supply dormancy belongs to the old frame โ€” the frame in which holders set prices by deciding whether to sell. In the current frame, prices are set by whether allocators receive funding, and holders are passengers. The report mistakes a passive statistic for an active force.

And the risk that genuinely matters for bitcoin's long-term legal perimeter is not securities classification, which is settled, but the precedent that publishing open-source code can be treated as a criminal act. That precedent does more to reshape the developer base than any dormancy reading does to reshape the float. The market is pricing the wrong risks, which is the normal condition of markets and precisely why measurement discipline pays.

The practical instrument set is narrow. Track Glassnode illiquid supply and Coin Metrics dormancy side by side; watch for divergence exceeding ten points, which would invalidate the single-source figure. Monitor exchange net position change for a sustained positive turn. Watch realized capitalization and MVRV for absorption. Monitor dormancy spikes, because the moment long-dead coins move is the moment the static number becomes informative. None of these is a headline. All of them are reproducible.

The question for this cycle is not how many coins are standing still. It is where the next dollar of flow settles, and who is authorized to move it. When the marginal buyer is an allocator pressing a policy weight onto a thin float, what does it even mean to say that a holder did not sell?
